چکیده

The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), establishing stringent quality objectives for European basins in the next years, prompts for the development of new tools to evaluate and improve the ecological status over European rivers. The present paper will provide an overview of the main activities carried out in the DECIS subproject within MODELKEY, an European research project, funded by the European Commission, aimed to contribute to the assessment, understanding and prediction of the impacts of environmental toxicants on biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems. The main aim of DECIS is to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that includes all project deliverables (i.e. exposure and effect models; key toxicants identification tool), and integrates Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) with socio-economic valuations. In fact, DECIS specific objectives are: development of integrated risk indexes, ranking and prioritization of hot spots at basin scale, estimation of ecological risks at site-specific scale, definition of monitoring programs based on ERA results, performance of socio-economic analysis at the basin scale, technical development and application of the new DSS to three representative European case-studies (Schelde, Llobregat and Elbe). The framework of reference for the development of the DSS is presented taking primarly into consideration EU regulatory frameworks. Moreover, possible links with other existing models and DSSs for river basin management are discussed.

A review of the biological characteristics of suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus Linnaeus, 1758) and its impacts on aquatic ecosystems

Following the report of suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus) from Anzali Wetland, the present study was conducted to review the biological and ecological characteristics of this species and its effects on aquatic ecosystems. A literature review revealed that the suckermouth catfish is native to South America and one of the most popular species in the ornamental fish industry. This speci...

A Bayesian model decision support system: dryland salinity management application

Addressing environmental management problems at catchment scales requires an integrated modelling approach, in which key bio-physical and socio-economic drivers, processes and impacts are all considered. Development of Decision Support Systems (DSSs) for environmental management is rapidly progressing. This paper describes the integration of physical, ecological, and socio-economic components i...

Application of Ecological Theory to Management of Arid Drylands: An Example from China

Rangeland ecosystems shift across dynamic thresholds between differentecological states in response to natural or human-induced factors. These differentecological states are the result of interactions among climate, soils, grazing history, and management practices. The notion of a single ‘‘pristine’’ final state is onlyconceptual in nature, and because of this, dynamic thresholds and the effects...

Using the Component Model of Sustainable Landscape for the Quality Assessment of Urban Natural Public Spaces: A Case Study from Tehran’s River-valleys

Ecological destruction in human-dominated landscapes has significant impacts on environment sustainability internationally. Landscape planning can play a role in mitigating the effects of human-related activities. One element of landscape planning involves the analysis of the biological, spatial and social arrangement of areas in an urban environment and identifying characteristics that are und...
